Carry OnSometimes the answer is to keep going. Forget words, figuring things out, and circumstances. Just keep moving your feet. ~Chuck "Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race." -- Calvin Coolidge
how to get aheadMany people have ideas as to how to do well in life. Of course, many people do not even agree on what success even means. I found one piece of advice many years ago that has been motivating and I share it with you for you to consider:
should I use clustering on a VM?ok, I'm going to keep this high level and simply share my opinion. I am not prescribing anything. If you want prescriptive advice, read Allan Hirt (that's what I do) and go to #sqlhelp.
thanks for BudMy Dad died horribly three weeks ago in a fall after the power got knocked out during Hurricane Sandy. I am barely able to talk about it and may never be for all I know. My Dad was a very special man. One that I did not appreciate until I became a man myself. He started a family at a later age than most men. He was imperfect. He was kind. He was bold. He was Bud. I will forever miss him. Thank you God, for my Dad.
blogging fun: dealing with spammers like Psychz Networks@PsychzNetworks is spamming me non-stop. Every minute of every day. I googled them and it seems Psychz Networks are famous for spamming people. I have removed non-moderated comments (I didn't want to do this and have since added non-moderated comments back) - didn't stop Psychz Networks' spam. I have added Captcha verification - didn't stop Psychz Networks' spam. (The Drupal Captcha module rocks, btw!)
[video] Inside Tempdb - Bob WardBoris Hristov shared this with me ages ago and I still haven't watched it yet (it is a few hours long). Maybe today or sometime this slow holiday week I will find the time to enjoy this TEMPDB knowledge feast. If you have the time, do yourself a favor and watch this yourself!
Bob Duffyok, everyone has their favorite SQL guru and favorite SQL tips. There are some people whose names you associate with insight and good advice. Sentences that begin with "So and so says..." make you take notice when you might otherwise be too distracted to listen as you should. Well, I am no different. Today I put the spotlight on one of my favorite SQL gurus - Bob Duffy. Bob simply rocks. Here are some of my favorite posts that he has written. Each one is a priceless gem.
circle of trustI have heard it said that a former US President once remarked "People tell you who they are by their actions. When people tell you who they are - believe them." I believe (and rely) on the concept of grace and forgiveness. This post is not about that. A famous fisherman once asked a famous Carpenter on advice on that subject and if that's what you're looking for then I refer you to that as it is a lot more authoritative than I could ever wish to be. This post is on trust.
"fail fast" vs calligraphyIf you are a person inspired by ideas, you have probably encountered the concept of "fail fast". You probably also have read the Steve Jobs' commencement speech where he illustrated how a random calligraphy class that he attended in college influenced the ways computers were designed throughout the world. I think both are true.
